Thanksgiving is the perfect time to open the windows and doors and bring the family outdoors! Let’s make sure you are able to welcome people into your yard this Thanksgiving and not hide it from everyone. This is a great time of year to plant a garden that tastes as good as it looks!
Here are my Top 4 Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving Garden:
1. ADD EDIBLE FLOWERS! They make a beautiful addition to the garden and if you plant budding plants now, they will be blooming for you by Thanksgiving that you can PICK AND EAT or add to a salad!
2. UPDATE YOUR WATERING SYSTEM! No one wants Thanksgiving to be a muddy mess! Be sure you water everything well now and then be sure the system is shut off the day before. Update your watering system for the season! It’s NOT about time, it’s about depth and frequency… (by winter you should be 1/4th what you were in the summer)
3. KEEP THE BUGS OUT: Have a pest problem? Plant pretty pest preventers such as Society Garlic, Garlic, Chives, Scented Geraniums, Marigold, Thyme… even Lemongrass! All of these are great additions to the Thanksgiving Garden!
4. START A FRIENDSHIP GARDEN: When asked what friends and family should bring for Thanksgiving, give them the usual and then offer up that they bring you a favorite plant to add to your Friendship Garden so you can share in the gratitude of your friendship for months and years to come! To JUMP-START your own, consider the plants/flowers that remind you of those you are grateful for and add them to your new garden (the plants I mean).
