Improving Your Garden Layout
When designing your garden, it is important that you optimize your space. In order to improve your garden layout, you need to be aware of the length and width of your garden beds. You don’t want to find yourself having to step into the garden bed to care for your plants.
It is important to know your arm span, when your arms are out by your side (like you are pretending to be an airplane) and measure your right middle finger to your left middle finger. That might sound difficult, but we have an easier way to figure it out. Your arm span actually equals your height!
As we work on our gardens, we don’t want to set ourselves up for failure by designing a garden that is too hard to manage. You want to create garden beds that are 1/2 your arm span from the garden path to the back of the bed. Or if it is a garden bed that you can access from all sides, you don’t want it larger than your height. This allows you to be able to reach the entirety of your bed without stepping in it.
The beauty of this is that you can then do some hyper growing. Keep in mind that the beds don’t have to be square or rectangular, you can make them curvy to add an elegant look, just be respectful of that distance. If you do want to make the bed wider than your height, then you can bypass it by adding in a stepping stone path that allows you to reach all the plants without stepping on the soil.
